The meeting started with a brief re-cap of the first Aldo Leopold Day back in April. Click here for an event summary.
After discussing possible dates in April of 2012, Saturday the 21st looks the most promising in order to avoid Easter conflicts. It is also Earth Day Weekend which would be a nice link with Leopold. Saturday, April 28, 2012 is another option.
The location of Leopold Day 2012 is yet to be decided. Carl is checking on the availability of Coe-Brown because Camp Yavneh is too wet and muddy at that time of year. The Boy Scout Camp is another option, however the lack of heat and difficult access may deter some.
The audience for this event is bigger than Northwood/NALMC and is the only event of this kind in New Hampshire, perhaps even in New England. The idea is to bring together a mix of public and private landowners for a community potluck and other events. We want to attract the local community, NALMC participants, Leopold enthusiasts, people from last year's event and others who are new to Leopold. To this end, we brainstormed the following list of possible agenda items:
After briefly discussing co-sponsors and budget, we finished the meeting with a sampling of baked chicken, banana bread, tea and peanut butter cookies provided by Carl, Steve and Ellen.
Discussion was continued from the sparsely attended May 10, 2011 regarding changes to the Operational Framework. It was decided by the six Committee representatives in attendance that the fall meeting will be considered the Annual Meeting and will mark the start of officer terms. Officer elections will occur annually at this meeting as necessary and should be attended by the majority of Committee representatives. While the location of this meeting is not fixed, it was decided that it will be a dinner meeting.
As the Operational Framework was discussed further, it was decided that the number of representatives on the Steering Committee should not be fixed at 12. It was agreed that the size of the Steering Committee must be flexible based on the needs of the group. Meeting attendance by Steering Committee representatives remains imperative to the effective operation of NALMC.
Before moving on to new business, recent film and workshop events were briefly reviewed and deemed highly successful. For summaries of these events, please click here.
Haley Stevens was introduced by Carl Wallman as a local independent contractor experienced with website maintenance, mailing lists, and development of promotional materials. These tasks can no longer be completed by Maryalice Fischer due to new full-time employment. Haley explained some of the more advanced capabilities of the NALMC website such as photo album slideshows, discussion forums, and newsletter style emails (similar to Constant Contact). Haley quoted a very reasonable rate to update the site to function as a digital archive of NALMC milestones and events. It was decided that Haley would be hired as needed to complete NALMC's technological tasks and maintain mailing lists.
Landowner, Theresa LaBrecque was nominated and voted in as a Steering Committee representative.
After general discussion of Ellen Snyder's Ecological Assessment report written in 2009, there was a vote in the affirmative for an addendum which would include all of the changes to the NALMC neighborhood since the original report.
After the success of Aldo Leopold Day 2011, Leopold Day 2012 is a logical event for next year. A Leopold Day committee will be formed to plan the event.
Steve Roy is interested in heading a forestry plan for the NALMC neighborhood. There is a lot involved with a project like this, but it is definitely something to consider for the future.
